We are looking for a Database Engineer to join a growing technical team in Malta. This is a hands-on role responsible for the administration, maintenance, monitoring, and optimisation of enterprise database platforms and supporting middleware technologies.
Working alongside experienced infrastructure and solutions teams, you will manage the full lifecycle of database environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and reliability across multiple production systems. The role also involves collaborating with systems, security, and service delivery teams to support business-critical environments.
Participation in an on-call support rotation is required.
Responsibilities
- Install, configure, administer, and maintain database platforms.
- Monitor database health, performance, and availability.
- Perform performance tuning and optimisation activities.
- Manage backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures.
- Support high availability and business continuity solutions.
- Apply database patches, upgrades, and security updates.
- Troubleshoot database and middleware-related incidents.
- Support middleware platforms where required.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
- Work closely with infrastructure, security, and service desk teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvements and automation initiatives.
- Ensure systems meet security, compliance, and service level requirements.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience in database administration.
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience administering at least one of the following:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Oracle Database
- IBM DB2
- Experience with database installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades.
- Strong understanding of:
- Database performance monitoring and tuning
- Backup, restore, and recovery
- High availability and disaster recovery concepts
- Good SQL scripting and query writing skills.
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, or similar.
- Exposure to middleware technologies (IBM WebSphere, IBM MQ, Cognos, or similar) is considered an advantage.
- Experience with cloud database services such as Azure SQL is a plus.
- Basic scripting or automation skills are beneficial.
- Experience working within managed services or multi-client environments is advantageous.
- Relevant technical certifications are considered a plus.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Good communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
